How can I protect my teeth from tooth grinding?

Bruxism, commonly known as “tooth grinding,” is the clenching and grinding of your upper and lower teeth. The biting force can be four times greater during sleep. Complications that may occur from bruxism are:

  • Broken fillings
  • Jaw pain
  • Tooth aches
  • Headaches and/or earaches
  • Tooth sensitivity 
  • Wear down of enamel 

When it comes to your oral health, we tend to focus on only the teeth and often bypass our gums. Just because your teeth are free of cavities does not exclude you from gum disease. Gums are just as important as the teeth they house. Gum disease can happen to anyone if they are not vigilant with their oral health care. Gingivitis can creep up on even the whitest, brightest, straightest teeth. 

Have you noticed pain or discomfort whenever you eat something cold, hot, or sweet? If so, you’re not the only one. Many people suffer from tooth sensitivity but choose not to treat it because they think it will go away on its own, however, this is not always the case. 

Does flossing really help?

Flossing helps by reducing bacteria in your mouth. Flossing also gets those hard to reach areas in your mouth that your toothbrush simply cannot reach. If you do not floss, plaque can accumulate in between your teeth and eventually turn into tartar. Flossing prevents the beginning stages of cavities. Take time to floss at least once a day to remove any food debris from your teeth.
