Chances are, at some point in your life, whether aged 6 or 60, you will need the services of an expert prosthodontist.

A prosthodontist is a dentist who has had years of advanced training and education in the field of restoring missing teeth and jaw structures.

This specialized field of dentistry is recognized by the American Dental Association and in order to be considered a prosthodontist, a dentist must complete three additional years of an ADA-accredited prosthodontic graduate program. A prosthodontist is an expert at diagnosing, planning treatments, rehabilitation, and maintaining the oral health of patients with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues.

How is a Prosthodontist Different from a Dentist?

A dentist is more like a primary care physician, you go to a dentist for your six-month checkups, and general dental concerns; a prosthodontist is a specialist in their field: like an orthopedist or a neurologist. You see a specialist when you need acute and specialized care in a particular area of treatment.

Prosthodontists are authorities in their specified field of oral care. When anything needs to be replaced from a single tooth to a full set, a prosthodontist is the optimal specialist to choose. Some dentists are able to perform treatments that prosthodontists can, but a prosthodontist is an expert that specializes in your particular problem.

Prosthodontists stay up to date on the most cutting-edge research and educational materials in tooth restoration and replacement technology as well as all of the contributors of losing and damaged teeth.

What Can a Prosthodontist Treat?

The root words of prosthodontist mean replacement and of the teeth; in other words, a prosthodontist treats you when you need something replaced in your mouth. Most common treatments include dental implants, crowns, veneers, inlays/onlays, implant crowns and bridges, implant fixed complete prostheses, implant-retained dentures, bridges, dentures, and TMJ/TMD treatment.

Prosthodontists can also be experts in other, more specific areas of dental care like geriatrics, cleft palate restorations, reconstruction due to cancer, or oral procedures to treat snoring or sleep disorders.
